DIVORCEE CONFESSES
IN
WORLD PREMIERE
AT
EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE
A THIRTY something divorcee lays herself bare in a new one-woman play based on her
own experiences. Melanie Sherwood presents the World Premiere
of Confessions & Obsessions of a Thirty Something Divorcee at
this year's
Edinburgh
Festival Fringe in August.
The funny and
poignant play is seen through the eyes of Xara Fox as she prepares to attend the
wedding of an ex-boyfriend.
The character reflects on her life and the choices she's made and during her
physical transformation
from 'hungover' to 'hot' she reveals the turmoil and confusion between who she really
is and the
face she presents to the world. Exploring themes such as relationships, divorce,
ageing, vanity,
children and the deafening tick-tock of her biological clock, we follow her on a
journey of self-discovery
and ultimately self-acceptance.
The writer
made the difficult decision to end her own marriage four years ago and still battles
with the idea
of being a failure and the stigma of being a 'divorcee'. After losing the essence
of herself within her marriage,
she compiled an intimate journal of her thoughts and feelings to help her cope with
the break-up. In the process, she rediscovered herself and her passion for theatre.
These personal diary entries ultimately became the inspiration for her revealing new play.
An Australian,
now based in Edinburgh, Melanie has made several television appearances most notably
in Aussie soap Neighbours where she worked alongside Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy)
and Anne Charleston (Madge Bishop). Equally at home on the stage, she has performed
various leading roles in plays and musicals and most recently appeared as Florinda
in Into The Woods. Other characters include the title role in Laura, the Crazy Girl
in Yerma, and Ado Annie in
Oklahoma
. She has also performed in her own 60s tribute show throughout
Australia
and in Bali
Indonesia
where a guitar with her signature is displayed in the Hard Rock Hotel Resort.
Confessions
& Obsessions of a Thirty Something Divorcee is for anyone who has ever questioned
their life path and the choices they have made.
